Tiffany and the Train

Tiffany Demartino near an old train by home.

I love where I live. I spend so much time in my car sometimes I feel like a sardine trapped in a tin can traveling from place to place. Usually, with a car load of lights and camera equipment and all my faith in the amazing magically powers of my wonderful GPS. I did an interview with Popular Photography Magazine years ago where they asked me what my favorite piece of equipment was. I glanced at my ever faithful Nikon 85 1.4 but the answer was my GPS. Without it, I was always late for dinner and with it I think I have more hair. No matter how many treacherous hours I spend driving throughout NJ and NY I always feel the weight lifted off my shoulders when I turn off I-80 and enter my neck of the woods. There sure is a lot of woods. Once I am off I-80 I need to start keeping my eye out for deer and other creatures that have a knack for racing across the road. I pass five or six fresh fruit stands and often what I pass is on the grill that night and it’s always a treat. Once I get closer to home there is a beautiful old abandoned train and it always catches my eye and my imagination. When my friend and model Tiffany Demartino contacted me to do a shoot (Tiffany came through for me on short notice when I needed her for magazine cover shoot and this was my thank you) the first thought I had was here’s a chance to use the train! Like many shoots, I had a laundry list of ideas of how to shoot Tiffany by the train but the above photo, my favorite of the day, just came to us as we worked around the light. For lighting I used one of my Profoto Acute B600r’s with a spot grid to light Tiffany and two SB-900’s both with David Honl grids to light the train. Tiffany is always fun and a pleasure to photograph and as for the train my wheels are turning on what creative images might come next.
